Behind the Headlines: The resumption of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians

On Thursday morning, 2 September 2010, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and PA President Mahmoud Abbas will relaunch direct negotiations in Washington, in the presence of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Israel welcomes the United States' invitation to resume direct talks with the Palestinian Authority without pre-conditions, having called for direct negotiations since the formation of the current government a year and a half ago.

Restoring Vision in Cameroon

Two ophthalmologists, Dr. Yoav Berger and Dr. Sergiu Socea, of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Rambam Health Care Campus returned from a mission to Yaounde, capital of the Republic of Cameroon in Africa, where they restored vision to dozens of patients, and instructed  local medical teams performing the same procedures. The mission was sponsored by MASHAV, the Center for International Cooperation of Israel's Foreign Ministry.

US Secy Clinton invites Israel and Palestinians to direct negotiations

"After proximity talks and consultations with both sides, on behalf of the United States Government, I've invited Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Abbas to meet on September 2nd in Washington, D.C. to re-launch direct negotiations to resolve all final status issues, which we believe can be completed within one year."

A Bridge of Trust in Israeli Hospitals

When a young Palestinian from the Gaza Strip was shot in the leg last year by Hamas during the ongoing conflict between the two main Palestinian political parties, Hamas and Fatah, he was offered treatment in both Egypt and Jordan, but instead he chose to go to Israel (video).

Both patients and doctors regard these vital surgeries as more than just medical treatment. Instead they see them as a unique way to help the peace process progress, by building an important "bridge of trust".

The unveiling of the Canada-Israel joint stamp

Celebrations for the launching of the stamp were held on Monday, April 26th on Parliament Hill. Among the guests were parliamentarians, business people and members of the Jewish community.

 

In her speech, Her Excellency Miriam Ziv made reference to the individuals who stand behind the diverse relationship between Israel and Canada, which the stamp beautifully represents.

 

"This stamp tells a story," she said. Our emblems powerfully symbolize the strength of our relationship, while the people who make up these emblems represent our history of friendship, cooperation and understanding".

MASHAV, the Agency for International Development Cooperation of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has launched its official Web site at: http://mashav.mfa.gov.il

 

Mashav is responsible for Israel's international cooperation and assistance around the world, through the provision of guidance and training in Israel and abroad. The assistance is provided in a wide variety of areas, including agriculture, medicine, education, the advancement of the status of women, community and family. Since the Center for International Cooperation was first established in 1958, more than 200,000 people have benefited from Mashav training programs.
